My name is Maurizio Tombari and I am an artisan specialising in the production of pipes. In 1996 I opened my laboratory in Pesaro (central Italy), where I created the Le Nuvole collection.
Via G. Passeri, 167, 61121 Pesaro, Province of Pesaro and Urbino, Italia
I was born in Pesaro in 1953 and graduated from the painting course at the Academy of Fine Arts in Urbino in 1978. From then until 1996 I worked in the pipe manufacturing companies of Mastro de Paja and Ser Jacopo, while devoting myself to interior decoration and painting activities. In 1996, Le Nuvole was born, an expression of the synthesis between my previous experience and the desire to create a personal product in which to pour my artistic vision. The attention to form, detail and finish has always been an inspiring element for me and has always stimulated my work. Over the years, my demands have grown, and I have forced myself to adopt a more meticulous process in order to obtain more and more cured and precious pipes. During the initial stages of the Le Nuvole project, I enjoyed unexpected and lucrative collaborations. The first was the contribution of my wife, Stefania, who, for fun, started sketching pipes wherever she could (she still does), showing an unspoilt look, being able to introduce original shapes and define the appropriate style for the line. Another decisive meeting was with an American friend who introduced me to the virtual world and suggested the possibility of e-commerce. The website www.pipe.it (an Italian pioneer in this field) has given me an international showcase and an exciting direct relationship with customers and visitors since 1998.

Pipes from artisan Maurizio Tombari are the most beautiful and elegant Pipes I ever seen

I’m one in a three-man (virtual) pipe club in the US, and we commissioned a sandblasted scoop from Maurizio. It was perfect. He felt the grain was not, however, and discounted the pipes. Quick and no shipping issues. It’s one of my finest pipes. Beyond that: just look at his work. No one does that, and it’s beautiful.

Since 2003, I have bought five Le Nuvole pipes. It was a pleasure to see Maurizio’s craftmanship evolve in time. His shapes are always original and unique, following a school of style that’s neither English, Italian or Danish. I have more than 60 pipes, and I love some brands more than others. Only few pipe brands are so iconic that I have more than two or three. Le Nuvole is one of them: some shapes may be weird at first, but try holding one in your hands. The flow, the grace, the inventiveness. And, of course, they smoke great. The ones from recent years probably smoke even better than the old ones, due to the experience in drilling and finding a great airflow. And don’t start me on the mouthpieces: Maurizio mostly uses acrylic, and I usually prefer ebonite. But try one of his pipes, and you will discover that an acrylic mouthpiece can actually be so comfortable, slim and easy to clench as an ebonite one. There are several great pipemakers in the world, but I find that Le Nuvole has a unique style that no one else can even approach. Distinctive, and different.
