In Genoa and in what is now Pietrasanta, just behind the Pietrasanta Cathedral (historical centre), in Versilia, there is one of the oldest laboratories of artistic crafts for the restoration of artistic carpets.
Art teacher Orna Bachar keeps alive the tradition begun in Genoa in 1918 by Alberto Meschoulam, who learned the secrets of the trade from her grandmother and her husband Benedetto Bumaguin's mother. The workshop offers her a high degree of expertise in the restoration, conservation and cleaning of these works of art that have been transformed into carpets, tapestries and kilims, making the most of the characteristics of each single element. The original carpets and tapestries, always different in design and craftsmanship from the hand of a true artist, require professionalism to survive over time. All the yarns used (wool, silk, cotton ......) are completely natural and dyed according to ancient artisan methods. When a carpet becomes art, the art becomes the carpet, who created its artistic expression in that particular place, in that historical and cultural period: thus whoever looks at the world of carpets, looks at it, recognises its historical time and the place where it was created. In the workshops, there are workshops for children and adults on the first stages of carpet creation in order to understand its structure (weft, warp, knots, symbols) and its symbolic language. For those who want to enter the magical world of carpets, discover its secrets and rediscover ancient crafts such as the creation of carpets, Bottega del Restauro Tappeti d'Arte offers an annual theoretical and practical course on the restoration of Killin carpets and tapestries, divided into three levels.
